ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores the issues associated with the construction of heritage in the Arabian Peninsula. Within an institutional regional identity known as The Arab States', the nations of the Arabian Peninsula as defined for the purposes of this book Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman and Yemen are not newcomers to the institutionalised global models for the safeguarding of cultural heritage. The interest in including a discussion of the heritage challenges taking place in Yemen merited a re-conceptualisation of the scope of this book, in order to make sure that the geographical characterisation the Arabian Peninsula was adequately representative of the areas discussed throughout its contributions. In the face of this vulnerability, efforts are made throughout to reveal the nuances involved in the construction of heritage debates particular to each case study.
