ABSTRACT

In Germany, around 27 per cent of all people killed in traffic in built-up areas in 2011 were cyclists. Accidents involving cyclists represent the second most common accident type after those involving car occupants (German Federal Statistical Office 2012). Injuries very often occur in these accidents, and cyclists are often seriously or fatally injured. For accidents involving injuries accidents while a vehicle is turning left or right at an intersection account for up to 20 per cent of all accidents involving cyclists (for example see Schnüll et al. 1992; Angenendt et al. 2005; Ortlepp et al. 2008; Alrutz et al. 2009). This type of accident is referred to as a ‘turning’ accident, and the road into which the vehicle turns is called the ‘intersection leg’.
