ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the transformation project of the former RDM shipyard in Rotterdam into a new business and knowledge location, the RDM Campus. The development of the RDM Campus and renewal of Heijplaat are part of the larger Stadshavens development strategy. The chapter examines the structure of Rotterdam across a number of dimensions or 'capitals' for sustainable competitiveness; it particularly analyses the dynamics of the port and the development of the city. The chapter sketches the wider strategies and visions of the City of Rotterdam and the Port Authority, namely the overall Stadshavens development strategy. It explores the RDM Campus in depth, namely its start-up history, vision and content. Despite these positive examples, the village remains challenged with social problems and decline, and the general socio-economic integration with the RDM Campus offers space for improvement.
