ABSTRACT
The Kasongan pottery industry is one of the most competitive in Indonesia. Yogyakarta is renowned as a centre of classical Javanese art, including batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry and puppet shows. The main economic sectors of Yogyakarta are education, tourism and light industries. In 1975, two people were instrumental in further developing pottery in Kasongan: Mr Septo Mukojo, a gallery owner, and Dr Salianto Sulaman, a lecture. After Indonesia's decentralisation, Yogyakarta local government had been especially active in promoting collaboration between government, private sector and civil society, including industrial associations, NGOs, universities and research institutions. The cluster programme is managed by the Department of Trade, Industry and Cooperation in Yogyakarta, supported by the Department of Culture and Tourism. Moreover, in addition to formal leadership of the Department of Industry, Trade and Cooperation, all actors accept and value the informal leadership of Dr Timboel.
