ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study, which explores the conversion of a derelict railway yard into a green, open, recreational area. This railway yard, covering 24 hectares of land and including a few railway buildings, was for more than 100 years a parking, repair and maintenance site for railway workers of the Belgian national railway company (NMBS). The chapter focuses on the structure of the city and the city dynamics across a number of dimensions resulting in an overview of main issues and challenges in Antwerp. It explores the vision and the urban development strategy at the level of the city. The chapter deals with the project that is central to the case study, the park railway north project. Park railway north aims to improve the quality of living in a deprived part of Antwerp by creating a large urban landscape park on an abandoned railway yard.
