ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how practically to find the right funding, and how to approach investors. Fundraising for social investment without proper planning will either fail, be more expensive than it needs to be, or can even cause knock-on problems that are unforeseen. An investment pack will need to be developed to take to potential investors. It will need sufficient background and details of the requirements for investor to easily understand needs. The process of completing an investment pack can also be valuable in itself, crystallising intent and aligning management teams and boards around investment plans. The content of the investment pack will vary depending on the size of the organisation, complexity of any investment “ask”, as well as the type of investor that is being approached. There are two separate investor processes to consider, each applying in certain circumstances: an approach to an institutional funder and a regulated approach to certain categories of retail investor.
