ABSTRACT

The spectrum starts on the left with traditional charity and other voluntary organisations. They typically use financial tools such as grants, donations and endowments to fund their work. Charities can also be social enterprises and vice versa. With an idea of the landscape of social purpose organisations, this chapter looks at social investment today – definitions, sources and types of investment. Many investors and philanthropists are starting to question whether charity and social purpose organisations alone are the best way to create social change. They are starting to use more commercial business-type models to change the world. The landscape of social purpose organisations is vast and varied. The chapter also provides information on those organisations whose primary aim is to create social value.
