ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents a very brief overview of the history of medicine from ancient Greece to the modern day. It discusses the importance of social determinant factors and their impact on our health. The book explains the need for health service design and interventions at a community as well as an individual level. It also discusses the value of behaviour-change design interventions by highlighting the importance of health-promoting lifestyles for healthcare professionals and the methodology that designers can follow. The book also presents the principles and benefits of salutogenic design in planning future built environments with the aim of creating a healthier society. It shows how architecture contributes to health and wellbeing by studying the relation between health, person and place. The book explores the role of design in the context of behaviour change in chronic health.
