ABSTRACT

This chapter uses a Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) framework to discuss how design has been used to support patient care, treatment, recovery, rehabilitation, experience and safety. Case studies are provided for two new areas for design in acute healthcare: slips, trips and falls (STF) and pre-hospital urgent and emergency care. Human interactions for inpatient STF are described using two new HFE models to illustrate the complexity of human capabilities and limitations. In particular, the importance of understanding the behaviours of all the humans in the sociotechnical system is discussed; in this case study the activities and actions of patients need to be supported with design for safer mobility. The second case study explores the complexity of design in unpredictable treatment environments with innovations such as a portable clinical (clean) work surface for assessment and treatment.
