ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the principles and mechanisms of exclusion, along with an approach that may be taken to carry out an exclusion analysis. A series of surveys of disability and family resources in Great Britain, and aimed to provide up-to-date information about the number of disabled people in Britain and their domestic circumstances. The underlying principle of the exclusion audit is that, by identifying the capability demands placed upon the user by the features of the product, it is possible to establish the users who cannot use the product irrespective of the cause of their functional impairment. However, preliminary findings from a number of analyses suggest that there is scope for improvement with many domestic products. Research continues to improve the quality and availability of capability data and to develop robust audit tools both for products and services, and for the specification of employment opportunities for an ageing population.
