ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses additive manufacturing (AM) technologies offer unrivalled design freedom and any complexity of geometry can be created efficiently, repeatedly and economically. Some of the most well-known and celebrated examples of AM-based personalisation lie within the medical healthcare sector. Hearing-aid manufacturers have been engaged in the production of personalised products for many years. Highly successful implementation of AM-based personalisation is orthodontic aligners and specifically the work completed by Invisalign. Other notable examples of personalisation within the medical field include those of implants and prostheses. Moving away from medical implants, but still within the medical/healthcare sector, AM has also been very successfully applied to manufacture of prosthetic fairings, specifically for leg amputees. One of the earliest examples of AM-enabled mass-personalisation was in the jewellery sector. Possibly the most humorous example of mass-personalisation through co-creation is the web-based portal 'Dildo Generator' offering personalised sex toys.
