ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the lessons learned from the experience of La 27e Region and the network of civil servants, elected representatives, designers, social innovators and various players from different disciplines involved in promoting innovation in the public sector and redesign of public policies. Insights at the ground level are generally the purview of expert-based activities to integrate the local context into the big picture of regional, national or global strategic environmental perspectives. The whole process was documented through blogs, notebooks, and the lessons learned not only benefit the local community and the regional governments but also the national network of regional governments. Exploring new power and governance patterns could enable the independence required by design into governments, in an alternative approach to the traditional supplier business model. Hacking relies on the meeting of different cultures that stay on the edge of the institution but are immersed enough to engage and team up with civil servants.
