ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. All of the different types of transport designer discussed in the book have roles in devising the devices and systems which will allow transport to happen in the future. Many young transport designers are obsessed with car design. The book reveals design for transport as signalling the need to take the user, and user needs, as the starting point for designing transport products. It shows that two important elements in such an approach should have influence: design for sustainability and design for inclusivity. It is crucial that design education produces high-quality design graduates, who can engage in designerly thinking to produce innovative solutions, embracing integrative and multi-disciplinary approaches, and addressing issues of sustainability and inclusivity. The future of transport design will be in the hands of transport designers. Radical designers who can influence the community of design practice will be required.
