ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a user or human-centred approach that is critical to all levels of transport design, from the setting of transport policy, to its implementation, through to infrastructure, vehicle and interface design. It provides an explanation of ergonomics in relation to person centred approaches to vehicle and transport design, the benefits of taking this approach, and the factors that might be included under a more inclusive definition of automotive and transport ergonomics. The chapter addresses how humans interact with vehicles and the traffic environment. It emphasizes that taking a user-centred approach to vehicle and transport design involves more than just considering the driving task, and should look at design from more than just the driver's perspective. Taking a person-centred approach to the design of transport systems means starting with the intentions the person has in using the system.
