ABSTRACT

Designing is a complex and sophisticated activity, and one which is usually regarded as inherently creative. The design is what links creativity and innovation. It shapes ideas to become practical and attractive propositions for users or customers. There has been much research into how the brain functions. Some of this has focused on the different characteristics of the two halves of the brain, or cerebral laterality. In any analysis of thinking, there are many dichotomies which seem to parallel the dual processing model. Donald Schon developed the idea of reflective practice. He applied it to professions such as design and contrasted it with technical rationality in incorporating a developed level of tacit knowledge. In the picture of designing which emerges here, it is seen as a process of developing two or more interacting parallel lines of thought, including one concerned with analysis and evaluation, and at least one other concerned with constructive solution proposition.
