ABSTRACT

Dry ports will have a positive effect on operations if they are able to make corridor systems more reliable otherwise if they are also unreliable then they will add to the problems that are faced. There are numerous definitions of dry ports across the literature, including those offered by the UN agencies. This functional definition is deliberate to include the different names that facilities similar to dry ports are called in different countries. Two of the more common names are inland container depots (ICDs) and container freight stations (CFSs). Not all ICDs and CFSs are dry ports. The largest dry port operation in Africa is City Deep which is located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The main one was the construction of a dry port at Mbeya in Tanzania to facilitate transshipment of cargo between road and railway systems. The Ethio - Djibouti Corridor consists of three components: the port of Djibouti and the dry ports.
