ABSTRACT

Johanna Ilmakunnas, ‘From mother to daughter: Noblewomen in service at the Swedish royal court, c. 1740–1840’

This chapter explores how female courtiers were chosen and appointed at the Swedish court, what skills they needed and how they were educated at home for their future roles as courtiers. It discusses elite women’s agency as work and career and explains what the tasks of female courtiers were. The social and professional networks of ladies-in-waiting tell how the profession of courtier was passed from mother to daughter. The chapter also untangles how female courtiers combined family life and their careers.
