ABSTRACT

Doctors on qualification are awarded an MBChB or MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine or Bachelor of Surgery). This is normally after a full-time training of a minimum of five years in a higher educational institution (HEI). A significant number of medical students will have extended their studies by one year to have additionally studied for a BSc. The medical degree is generic, aiming to produce a well-rounded doctor competent in core knowledge, skills and attitudes at a level appropriate to enter practice at Foundation Year on graduation. Newly qualified doctors then undertake a further two years of Foundation training, after which they are eligible for full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), and able to commence clinical training in the specialty of their choosing.
