ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the increasing presence of Electronic Performance Support Systems (EPSS) from previously standalone entities into new and exciting applications in the world of business and commerce. The chapter measures of performance are defined as quantity of output, financial income and customer-satisfaction. In commerce, the use of Business Information Systems (BIS) is, of course, well documented. The general spectrum of BIS incorporates the principal areas of transaction processing, management information, decision support, executive information, end-user information and special-purpose applications. Information kiosks are an example of where multimedia technology has been employed in a range of scenarios to supplement numerous business services. Two recent examples where ubiquitous technology has been adapted to offer clear and direct performance benefits include Radio-frequency identification (RFID) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Their application in business contexts has been described as belonging to a broader concept known as ubiquitous commerce.
