ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a technological basis for the use and development of electronic performance support systems (EPSS). It considers human-computer interaction (HCI) as a means of providing a communication infrastructure for human use of computers and EPSS. Because communication and storage infrastructures are such an important aspect of modern life, society and the provision of performance support, special consideration is given to these topics. The 'intent-technology-outcome' (ITO) model is a three-step representation of a technology-based approach to problem solving. The chapter introduces tool-augmentation model (TAM) was indirectly when it was used as a basis for the 'telephone augmentation' that was presented in the section entitled 'The Importance of Computers'. The technology is an indispensable component of modern living and of contemporary societies. It is therefore a necessary and fundamental 'building block' in the design and fabrication of electronic performance support tools and environments.
