ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the nature of human communication and the ways in which electronic performance support system (EPSS) tools can be used to influence its effectiveness in terms of communication competence (CC). The chapter describes how an EPSS environment can used to provide support for people who are involved in providing awareness and understanding of dyslexia and the effects that it can have on communication competencies. Improving communication in terms of raising awareness and understanding of dyslexia issues has become an important issue. Consequently, the British Dyslexia Association (BDA) claims that individuals with dyslexia may have underlying difficulties that affect communication competencies. In terms of supporting two-person exchanges and group communication, e-tools that facilitate the sending, receiving and conveying of messages often referred to as computer-mediated communication (CMC) tools. Collis and Verwijs have discussed some of the important e-tools for supporting group communication activities such as email, video conferencing, bulletin boards, discussion boards, shared knowledge bases and document sharing tools.
