ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the concept of disability in the context of electronic performance support system. Such as disability, accessibility, exclusion, inclusion and community are explored together with ideas such as adaptability, personalisation and universal design. The chapter describes some of the existing categories of device that are often used as assistive technologies and also consider novel uses of standard computer and mobile technologies in the context of disability and accessibility. Assistive technologies are often defined as being 'any technology which can be used to help someone with an innate disability to overcome the limitations typically associated with that disability'. With the concept of adaption in mind, we believe that the adaptive personal learning environment (APLE) concept can be applied in a wider sense as an accessible personal electronic performance support tool for use in a variety of contexts. This would make it an accessible personal environment (APE) that is not specially geared to learning.
