ABSTRACT

This chapter examines various aspects of performance enhancement in the domain of health care. It explores the effectiveness and efficiency of clinical activities and also explores the management of health processes to support clinical practice. The chapter also examines medical aspects of performance enhancement and covers the full spectrum of clinical activities including situations where the work of nurses, paramedical professionals, laboratory staff, doctors and other care professionals can be enhanced by the use of appropriate technologies. The chapter divided into three parts; they overlap to some extent because every clinician is also a member of the public and access to virtually all the information sources is open and transparent. The three parts cover: enhanced support for clinical professionals; performance-enhancing informatics for domain management; and clinical information to support patients and effective contributions from individuals to the maintenance of their own health status.
