ABSTRACT
This chapter explores Inca: King of the Andes to focus on the exhibition itself and more on the participation of Peru in it in order to inquire more specifically on the ways in which the terms of participation are defined. It focuses on the responses of Peruvian public and private institutions to the challenges posed by the emerging forms of heritage management. The chapter discusses how collaborative enterprises operate in terms of neoliberal governmentality within Peru as well as internationally. It focuses on the formation of public subjectivities, the reinvention of national narratives and national projects, the process of defining and negotiating the terms of citizen participation. The chapter also focuses on the constitution of political legitimacies and leadership, as well as in the emergence of new forms of knowledge and expertise. It identifies three principles that articulate new narratives and performativities in current Peruvian society, being constitutive of neoliberal governmentality.
