ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that there is growing evidence of the positive role children can play in mitigating climate change. However, society has to reconstruct its view of children as active citizens in social, economic and environmental development. Children may require additional supportive measures or spaces where they can be more active agents of change and integrate their rights to protection, survival, development and participation. Recognising children as important stakeholders in sustainable development implies advocating and lobbying for their inclusion and participation in decisions on climate change and broader development. A joint qualitative study undertaken by UNICEF and the South African Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, and the Department of Environmental Affairs, was reported as Exploring the Impact of Climate Change on Children in South Africa. It was complemented by the study Change through the Eyes of a Child: South African Children Speak about Climate Change.
