ABSTRACT

This chapter examines four modes of practice through which fashion design students studying in Antwerp, Belgium are socialised to define the atmosphere of their design collections. These practices include the search for inspirational sources, which are evaluated and experimented on using a variety of mixed-media methods. Students in turn draw on these source materials to create elaborate scenes that describe the “feeling” or “atmosphere” of the particular kind of design collection they want to create. Thus, in reflecting on these practices this chapter provides a vantage into the processes by which student designers learn to make atmosphere.
