ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to showcase the application of a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, a Hermeneutic Circle, to working with professionals doing their PhDs and learning about research. It uses tools of expression which suggest the action of a hermeneutic circle; the narrative weaves between description, reflection, action and silence in all possible orders. The chapter focuses on some reflections on the value of phronesis as a framework to evaluate the circle. It offers pointers about the movement as both transparently expressing the art and practice of phronesis and the Circle as phronesis-in-action. The following themes represent a drawing out of some of the central features of the group experience that emerge seamlessly from the description. They are Cultivation of Practice, Playfulness and Humour, Relationship and Dialogue, Grappling and Uncertainty. The chapter reviews the generalizability of the work of the Circle in relation to the applicability of such a methodology to other practices, including within management and Higher Education.
