This chapter views that attention was drawn to the fact that several of the consulted mosques were recipients of the Swedish state's special funding for religious communities, funding which is linked to the faith community's promotion of fundamental values of Swedish society, in particular the promotion of equal rights for men and women. The need for a state-sponsored education for imams regarding Swedish society, its organisation, fundamental values and laws, in particular family law legislation, was once again brought to the agenda. The Nordic states have a reputation of being among the most secular states in the world. The latest pan-Nordic development is the removal of all legal differences of treatment on the basis of a person's sexual orientation. The institution of registered partnership as a legal tool for same-sex couples to formalise their mutual relationship was developed in the Nordic legal and religious environment towards the end of the 1980s.
