ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study on driving a Scottish family business forward: from faither to Wee lassie. Scotland provides the cultural backdrop to this chapter for faither to lassie succession. These differing terms in Scots dialect highlight the condition of Scotland as part of a larger state, the United Kingdom, but with very distinct cultural identities which vary across regions of Scotland. The cultural and regional identities of Scotland play a key role in this case study as the backdrop against which the father daughter succession developed and as an influencer for the business. The interaction between Scottish culture and the environment for family businesses is in itself of interest, and at one level could be seen to create the environment within which any succession process happens. The case study draws attention to a series of events and experiences associated with a daughter's childhood, adolescence, and adulthood regarding her views and emotions toward her father's business.
