ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study on a sweet life: a daughter successfully manages an immigrant family business. The case illustrates the drive, determination, and perseverance of an unusual woman who is dealing with the complexities involved in merging a formal MBA education within a family business that was started by her immigrant parents and operates in a traditional ethnic neighborhood. The chapter highlights some ethnic/cultural issues surrounding Indian family businesses in the United States (US) and has also noted the paucity of studies in the father-daughter succession theme for such businesses. The majority of studies and rhetoric on immigrant entrepreneurship by and large overlook the phenomenon's gendered character, which in itself produces a one-sided perception of the socio-economic processes at play in this field of research. The traditions of Indian immigrants in the United States of America (USA) are an affirmation of their ethnic identity which is a critical psychological aspect of the minority individual in society.
