ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the status of female immigrant entrepreneurs in Japan-the largest economy in the world. It highlights that although woman entrepreneurship has been accepted completely by a narrow segment of population in large cities of Japan such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. The women who hired employees have created jobs both for the Tokyo citizen and immigrants that have entered Japan. Although women in this study operate small businesses, it is important to the country's economy because they are potential employers in the future and they contribute through activities such as purchasing raw materials, paying rent, paying taxes and interest on loans. The Female Immigrant Entrepreneurship Project (FIEP) survey was administered to 44 FIEs, and the recorded data were analyzed using SPSS 16.0 for Windows. Analysis of the results confirmed many of the findings that were recorded by census data and research, while interesting patterns about FIEs in the metropolitan Tokyo area were revealed.
