ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the female immigrant entrepreneurship and the driving forces that push and pull immigrant women towards entrepreneurship using case study research among Chinese female immigrant entrepreneurs in Palmerston. In this chapter, the case study method was used to explore the experience of entrepreneurs in various, sequential stages of the growth of their businesses. Two Chinese female immigrant entrepreneurs in Palmerston North, New Zealand, were interviewed. Palmerston North has a vibrant student population and varied immigrant communities that are steadily changing the city's traditionally homogeneous nature. Located just two hours by car from the capital, Wellington, the city of Palmerston North is home to a modest, thriving Chinatown of sorts alive with ethnic stores, restaurants and takeaways, scholarly associations, traditional Chinese medicine and therapy-based outlets. The theoretical framework of mixed embeddedness to interview the case study subjects, the research offers insights into the economic and social challenges and achievements experienced by two Chinese female entrepreneurs in New Zealand.
