ABSTRACT

From its origins in classical Rome, the triumph ceremony has been defined as the ritual celebration of a military victory throughout the city. That is the reason why it is indissolubly associated with the very idea of empire, with the concept of an expanding power successively widening its borders by dominating other peoples and civilizations. In fact, it was the authorization of the triumph given by the Republican Senate that turned a general into an Imperator. His march through the decorated city beneath triumphal arches, amid the cheers of the crowd, granted him the tribute to the level of hero.
