ABSTRACT

Local governance institutions are an essential part of every modern state regardless of the political regime or territorial size of the country and their functioning varies significantly due to political, economic and cultural factors. The chapter examines the notion of local governance in Belarus, the legislation on local governance and its application and the actual functioning of local governance in the country. The main research question that the chapter aims to address is whether the current system of local governance in Belarus corresponds to the needs of the society in Belarus and to what extent does the current economic and financial crisis limit the direction and the rate of the administrative division reform in Belarus.
