ABSTRACT

Asia is home to many of today's megacities, and is characterized by rapid urbanization linked to economic growth. However, the formal systems of development are not working and are unable to keep up with the real substance, scale and pace of change. Many Asian countries have insufficient policies and mechanisms to address the problems of adequate housing for the urban poor, or still do it in a conventional government, contractor or private sector-led manner, which does not reach large numbers of poor.
