ABSTRACT

This chapter is a reflection on how the actor consulting model has been used to guide this review of cultural heritage policy. The research described in this chapter was carried out in the Dutch sub-project of the European Union (EU)-funded Lance Wad-project, which covers the greater area of the Wadden Sea. The international project Lance Wad was established to address three main aims: to make an inventory and carry out an evaluation of cultural heritage; to research the perception of the environment; and to promote sustainable use of the cultural heritage. The parallel between the cultural heritage policy and earlier policy developments in environmental planning and water management shows that in order to reach the desired goals we must ensure that attention from society and in particular from politicians remains high. So public and political attention to the cultural heritage theme must be maintained or increased, especially in the later phases of the policy life cycle.
