ABSTRACT
Because the introduction to this volume provides a comprehensive analysis of its chapters and themes, I write as a migration historian bystander. It is striking, first of all, that these chapters create a narrative rhythm when taken all together – although they are placed as a group between ascriptive practices of medieval settlements and cities on one hand, and the untrammelled free-market capitalism of the industrial age on the other.
