ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on the idea for this edited collection arose out of a series of interdisciplinary workshops entitled 'Gender and Migration in 21st Century Europe' hosted jointly by the Migration Unit and the Feminist Legal Research Unit at the University of Liverpool between October 2006 and April 2007. It addresses the impact of migration on family life. The book examines the impact of migration on women's labour market participation and career progression, and reflects on the gender implications of immigration systems. Ruth Lamont's analysis and detailed review of the legal framework governing one of the more distressing features of international relationship breakdown; that of cross-border parental child abduction. Dianne Scullion's focuses on child trafficking, exploring the motivations behind trafficking for the purposes of child domestic labour and the consequences for children.
