ABSTRACT

Work and family are two realms of our lives that constantly interact with each other, at both the level of intimacy and the societal level. The different factors which have contributed to changes in male and female roles in the context of contemporary family life are shaped mainly by the overall process of development of Western societies and the shift to an industrial-consumer economy followed by a considerable increase of women in employment. As more and more women have entered the labour market, dual-career families have gradually started to become the norm. However despite the changes in social roles, the re-organisation of economic responsibilities has not been accompanied by a redistribution of domestic responsibilities between women and men.
