ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and analyses men and women's paid work. Unlike the decades at the beginning and end of the twentieth century, the period examined in the chapter has been little studied in regard to women's paid work. The chapter discusses the contribution of different economic sectors to the country's growth, the sub–sectors that were most important in terms of employment, the gender distribution of different economic activities and the principal trends that characterize men and women's work. It analyses representations of women's paid work, as found in different media (studies, communications media). The studies show that between the women and man of professional levels and middle and high classes, there grows a vision of the feminine employment as an opportunity of development for the women. With respect to the sexual distribution of men and women on the labour market, Agriculture is the principal source of employment for the men, followed by Industrial production and thirdly, the Services and trade.
