ABSTRACT

Ageing plays an increasingly important role in the shaping of the European Union’s social culture. Between 2005 and 2030, the number of people aged 65 and over will rise by 52.3 per cent, while those aged between 15 and 64 will decrease by 6.8 per cent. As a result, the dynamics of society will change: there will be more elderly people (aged 65–79), very elderly people (80 and over) and older workers (55–64), but fewer young people (15–24), young adults (25–39) and adults of working age (40–54) (Green Paper 2005).
