ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the aspects of the Camino pilgrimage that to date have not been discussed in depth, namely the gendered dimensions of the practice. For researchers who want to explore the increased interest in pilgrimage, the reanimation of the Camino offers fascinating points of study. When the modern revitalization of the Camino pilgrimage began in the 1950s and 1960s most pilgrims travelled by car. Since the 1990s, the Camino pilgrimage has continued to grow and to attract participants of steadily wider ranges of nationalities. General interest in the Camino is also reflected in the range of published accounts about the pilgrimage. Besides guidebooks, photo books and journalistic accounts, several Swedish authors have turned out novels or essays based on their own experiences on the Camino. The activities of the Swedish Church and the wave of interest in the Camino can be said to form two strands of the Swedish pilgrimage movement, with a certain overlap between the two.
