ABSTRACT

Some ten to fifteen years ago, social theorists interested in technology claimed that the Internet, mobile phones and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) would revolutionise social relationships. Mobile communications have extended the concept of mobility from physical movement to social interactions, and have also changed several practices in daily life. This chapter addresses the connections between three key elements: mobile technology practices in everyday life, the role of gender in these practices and information society policy. It discusses everyday practices of mobile technology use with reference to the latest available information society strategy paper of the Finnish government. Gender equality is also one of the top priorities of the national ethos. The chapter presents examples through which it might be possible to further develop policy options that would give gender issues more prominence in policy guidance for the information society. It also discusses some dimensions of mobility, social communication and gender.
