ABSTRACT

This chapter examines inclusivity in society through an investigation of the claims made about ICT use by university students. Against the background of the debate about so-called digital natives', the chapter presents the results of observations concerning the skill levels displayed by university students, and argue that, contrary to frequently made assertions, students do not display a greater affinity for ICTs. Students today think they know a lot about the internet, about technology. In fact, many educators who planned to rely on the use of technology in their own classes, found their students' skill levels insufficient for university level studies, and they had to teach students basic IT skills in addition to their subject matter. Students were given detailed handouts on how to produce their graded output, and almost 10" of the students requested and were provided with additional tuition in office but there was little to no improvement in the computer skill levels of students.
