ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on urban fieldwork research into the practice of pedestrian patrol. It focuses on a small team of professional outreach workers operating in the city centre of Cardiff, Wales. The team works with some of the more vulnerable and troubling occupants of the city centre, including the rough- sleeping homeless. The chapter focuses its interest is in the physical and moral geography of the city and in pedestrian patrol as a particular way in which to see and know urban space. Thinking about rhythm is a useful way in which to approach and appreciate the work of outreach in the city. Looking out at the city from the office window of Cardiff County Council's City Centre Team, the CCT manager, Steve, reminds us that a shared stage is not without its divisions, its winners and losers.
