ABSTRACT
The first Japanese immigrants arrived in Brazil in 1908. They and their descendants have long maintained strong ties to Japanese culture, even during the Second World War. According to Pacievitch (2008, 12), there are currently 1.5 million Japanese and Japanese-Brazilians in permanent residence within the territory of Brazil; the country has had the largest Japanese ethnic population outside Japan in the world since the 1930s.
