      ABSTRACT

The unprecedented economic development and growth in China over the past 30 years has resulted in building booms and great opportunities for Chinese architects, leading to a huge number of projects that most of them struggle to deal with mentally as well as physically. The "New Observation" column hosted by Shi Jian, a critic, publisher and curator on the Tianjin-based journal Urban Flux; the critical coverage of contemporary Chinese architecture by The Architect and Domus China, both based in Beijing; and the initiatives of theoretical discussions and debates by Time + Architecture, a journal based in Shanghai. Joined by architects, critics and architectural scholars, these discourses have composed an important part of the architectural scenario in China today. The China Architecture Media Awards (CAMA) was established in 2008 as a biannual event for contemporary Chinese architecture in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
