ABSTRACT

This chapter advocates that the achievement of the health-related goals or any single Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the target of 2015 requires a comprehensive effort to address all of the eight goals. Global health is interdependent with development, environmental sustainability, and medical technological advances. In its report Health in the Millennium Development Goals', the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasised that poverty and lack of development affect health. This chapter suggests that good governance principles foster international partnerships and the inclusion of all stakeholders that is needed to advance people's health and well-being. It considers examples of good governance in response to HIV and the highly pathogenic avian influenza. In other words, it is an application of good governance principles for health and development. To achieve the MDG goals, it is necessary to form global partnerships to further trans-disciplinary programmes and policies built upon the participation of multiple stakeholders and engaging multiple sectors for effective and timely action.
