ABSTRACT
On 23 December 2012, in the wake of the rampage at Sandy Hook elementary school, in Newtown, Connecticut,1 The Journal News, a small suburban newspaper in New York state, published an interactive map of small-gun permit holders (Figure 1, overleaf ). The map unleashed a restorm of outrage,2 so it was removed in January 2013. What remains online is a series of screenshots.3
