ABSTRACT

This chapter explains that in some companies a project charter is prepared as part of the authorisation process, and you should find much of what you need to know in that document. In many cases the manager is appointed to a project organisation that already exists and we have no initial authority to change the way in which people are organised. In some large projects there might be several very important stakeholders, including investment banks, large contractors, and public authorities and so on. In projects with significant public exposure you might also have to deal with environmental groups, local authorities and members of the public. Undoubtedly the best way in which to start a new project is to have a kick-off meeting. The chapter discusses the development of management theory has one thing in common with the fashion industry, namely that this year's topic of discussion can be next year's history.
